Hoyt grew up in Shelby, North Carolina. After graduating from North Carolina State University and Campbell University School of Law, he went to work at the largest law firm in North Carolina. Hoyt focused on representing banks, insurance companies and other large corporations. After defending businesses for four years, Hoyt decided he wanted to represent people.

So 20 years ago, Hoyt came to Martin & Jones to lead the personal injury section of the firm. Other attorneys, paralegals, and additional staff members support and work alongside him. Hoyt works on personal injury cases involving serious automobile accidents, nursing home neglect, medical malpractice, fraud and product liability claims. He has extensive experience representing people seriously injured in trucking collisions.

Hoyt Tessener has been featured as personal injury attorney of the month in an article for the Triangle edition of the monthly Attorney at Law Magazine. Publisher Bob Friedman interviewed Hoyt for the feature that appears in the October issue. Hoyt talks about his trucking accident cases, teaching jury selection at Campbell and attending Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyers College. Click on the image to the left to read the entire article.

Hoyt has tried cases in all North Carolina federal courts and throughout North Carolina in state court. Hoyt is the past chairman of the North Carolina Bar Association's Litigation Section and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice's Auto Tort Section. Hoyt served on the Board of Governors of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. He is a member of the Southern Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice and the American Society of Legal Advocates.

In 1997, noted trial lawyer Gerry Spence selected Hoyt to attend his Trial Lawyers College in Wyoming. After attending the college, Gerry invited Hoyt to join the college faculty. Hoyt is a frequent instructor for continuing legal education programs and teaches jury selection to Campbell University third-year law students. Hoyt has been selected by his peers for inclusion as a Super Lawyer and in Business North Carolina's Legal Elite. Hoyt has also been recognized as a Best Lawyer in America and as a Top 100 Trial Lawyer for North Carolina by the American Trial Lawyers Association.
