John Alan was born and raised in Pine Level, North Carolina.
Upon graduation from high school, he went to the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was inducted
into the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society. After graduating
in 1979, he entered law school at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member
of the Holderness Moot Court.
John Alan has been practicing law with Martin &
Jones since he became a lawyer in 1982. Initially, he
devoted his practice to representation of workers with
occupational diseases caused by exposure to toxic chemicals
and cotton dust. His work in these occupational disease
claims led to an interest in both medicine and products
liability claims. In the mid-1980s, John Alan began
representing injured people in lawsuits against major
corporations that manufactured toxic chemicals, asbestos, defective pharmaceuticals and medical devices. From 1983 through 1997, he represented
approximately 1,100 women from 28 states who had been
injured by the Dalkon Shield IUD.
In 1987, he undertook his first medical
malpractice claim. He now heads the firm's medical
malpractice group, which is comprised of 6 attorneys
and 12 support staff members, including a former medical
malpractice insurance adjuster.
He has successfully represented victims of medical malpractice
in state and federal courts throughout North Carolina,
and he has tried these cases from the mountains to the
coast.
While a large portion of his practice is now in the
medical field, John Alan continues to enjoy handling
a wide variety of product
liability claims, arising from both defective products
causing injuries and toxic chemicals causing disease.
John Alan has also handled consumer class actions in
the past. Currently, he represents consumers throughout
North Carolina in class action lawsuits arising from predatory lending practices.
