Tom has been licensed to practice law in North Carolina
since 1980. He graduated from East Carolina University
in 1977 and earned his JD from the University of Richmond
in 1980 where he was also a member of the Law Review.
Tom has a varied and extensive experience in law. As
a third year law student, Tom interned a year with the
United States Attorney's Office in Richmond, where he
assisted in criminal and civil litigation, actually
trying his first case in federal court under Virginia's
third year practice rule. Returning home to eastern
North Carolina, Tom joined a general practice law firm
in Goldsboro. He values experiences gained there because
it exposed him to a variety of clients and practice
areas, including criminal, domestic, real estate and
personal injury. He tried cases in all court levels
from state magistrate court to federal court, and in
all state appellate courts.
In 1985 Tom started his own solo practice where he
continued to represent a variety of clients in all areas
of law. Tom merged his practice with another group in
1988 to form the firm of Walker, Young and Barwick,
PA. In this growing practice, Tom began a specialization
in civil litigation while developing an insurance defense
practice that included automobile negligence and medical
malpractice. Gradually though, Tom began to focus his
practice in medical negligence.
In 1999, Tom had the opportunity to join Martin &
Jones in their medical
malpractice section. He understands injuries that
occur when medical care goes wrong take a tremendous
physical and emotional toll on the patient and family.
Tom welcomed the idea of putting his many years of experience
in litigation to use helping victims of malpractice.
He finds representing victims not only more challenging
but he also gains a greater sense of satisfaction when
his clients successfully obtain closure from their encounters
with bad medical care.
Tom resides in Clayton, North Carolina with his wife
and their three children. He is a community activist,
having served as a board member and president of the
Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the military
affairs committee, a member of the Jaycees, a mason,
a Shriner, a city councilman for the City of Goldsboro,
and a deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Goldsboro.
Tom participates in a variety of other volunteer organizations.
He has served as president of the Wayne County Bar Association.
Tom enjoys a variety of hobbies and activities but
especially loves being with his family, traveling, sailing,
diving and cooking.
