Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit

The lawyers at Martin & Jones are investigating potential claims on behalf of patients who suffered complications from transvaginal placement of surgical mesh for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapsed (POP).

In July, the FDA issued an updated statement about serious complications associated with surgical mesh placed through the vagina (transvaginal placement) for SUI or POP.  The FDA had issued a public notice in October 2008 calling complications "rare," and in a change from that 2008 statement, the FDA stated in July 2011 that the serious complications associated with transvaginal mesh "are not rare."

"Furthermore, it is not clear that transvaginal POP repair with mesh is more effective than traditional non-mesh repair in all patients with POP, and it may expose patients to greater risk," the FDA stated, noting that based on updated analysis of reported adverse events, the use of transvaginal mesh is an "area of continuing serious concern."

According to the FDA, in October 2008, the number of reported adverse events for the previous three years was more than 1,000.  For the time period from January 2008 through December 2010, an additional 2,874 complications were reported in association with surgical mesh repair of pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontince.

Reported complications include erosion of the mesh through the vagina, pain, infection, bleeding, painful intercourse, organ perforation, urinary problems, recurrent prolapse, neuro-muscular problems, vaginal scarring/shrinkage and emotional problems.

Complications have been reported involving mesh products from various manufacturers, including Johnson & Johnson, C. R. Bard, Inc., American Medical Systems, Inc. and Boston Scientific.
