General Motors Under Investigation for Delayed Recall

Investigations have been opened this week by both Congress and the Justice Department into why General Motors failed to act more quickly in its recall of 2003-2007 model year vehicles affected by a faulty ignition switch. The investigations involve the recall of the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Pontiac Pursuit in model years 2005-07 (sold only in Canada); the 2003-07 Saturn Ion; the 2006-07 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice; and the 2007 Saturn Sky.

GM stated in a March 11 dated letter to the NHTSA that it had notified dealers of the most recent recalls, mailed letters to owners on March 10 and March 11 and would be providing a recall service bulletin to dealers in early April. GM is asking dealers to replace the faulty ignition switches on the affected models, and GM stated in the letter that the company would reimburse owners for an repairs completed within ten days of the mailing to owners.
