A senior executive with airbag manufacturer Takata was grilled at a Senate hearing this week. Senators received non-committal answers in response to questions of the executive regarding whether Takata accepted responsibility for injuries and deaths caused by defective airbags.
So far, more than 14 million vehicles from 11 automakers have been recalled due to faulty airbags. A defect with the airbag causes the inflator to break apart, spraying passengers with metal shards. Questions have been raised about the recall since it is based on geographic areas with automakers and Takata suggesting that the problem is most severe in warmer, more humid climates. On November 18, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called on automakers to expand the recall of airbags nationwide.
