Health Experts Predict Asbestos Disease Epidemic in India
According to a recent article in The Lancet, India will likely be facing an epidemic of asbestos-related diseases in future years.
While most developed countries have banned the use of asbestos in the construction industry, India’s usage of asbestos has actually increased dramatically in the last decade. The leading health experts on asbestos-related diseases say that it’s virtually certain that this will lead to greatly increased rates of death from asbestos-related diseases like malignant mesothelioma.
As for why India even allows asbestos to be used at all, a top environmental consultant points out that the asbestos industry is very powerful in India, and India’s laws do not give much protection to employees who develop occupational diseases.
