National Asbestos Awareness Week Reminds of Asbestos Dangers
As a result of the US Senate unanimously passing Senate Resolution 66, the first week of April will be known as National Asbestos Awareness Week. Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) sponsored the resolution, with the intention of highlighting April 1st – 7th, 2013, for the purpose of reminding the public about the dangers of asbestos.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization also worked to help get this resolution passed. Americans are still being exposed to asbestos today, although not nearly at the levels that existed in the 1970s and earlier decades. Asbestos is a carcinogen that causes a number of health problems in humans, including malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and other cancers, as well as various non malignant conditions such as asbestosis and pleural scarring.
