Several Ford Models Being Recalled for Safety Belt Issue
Ford has issued a recall on more 680,000 vehicles, most of which are in the United States. According to news reports, certain Ford Fusions and Lincoln MKZs vehicles are being recalled because of a safety belt issue. Ford indicates that the front seat belts may malfunction in a crash.
During deployment, the pre-tensioners can generate increased heat that may cause cables the break, preventing the belts from being able to perform their function of keeping people in their seats. The pre-tensioner is what drivers and riders feel tighten seat belts as cars are stopping.
Ford indicates that dealers can inject an insulating coating to the anchor pre-tensioners in the front driver and passenger seat belts systems. The insulation will protect the cables from the heat generated. Ford states there will be no cost to the vehicle owner.
Ford has stated that it is aware of “two accidents and two injuries associated with this issue.”
