Traffic Fatalities Increase After Years of Decline
After years of decreasing, the number of road-related deaths has increased two years in a row, according to numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While federal figures may not confirm it (due to possible lack of identifying and tracking as cause of crash), many suspect the increase is due to distracted drivers using mobile devices.
This conclusion was drawn based on three observations. First, pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, who for distracted drivers can be easy to miss seeing, have seen the largest increase in fatalities. Secondly, the use of cell phones has not only increased in general, but how they are being used has changed as well. Thus thirdly, rather than only talking while driving, mobile phone users are texting, tweeting and posting.
