Why We Need Trial Lawyers
The people at our firm are proud of the work we do and we are honored that people come to us for help. That’s why it is so disturbing to hear those who advocate for what is misleadingly called ‘tort reform’ smear trial lawyers and the injured people they represent.
We live in a society that values responsibility and accountability, yet the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other ‘tort reform’ advocates want immunity from being held accountable when they negligently injure people through their actions or products. The ongoing Toyota recall scandal is a reminder of the important role trial lawyers play in uncovering unsafe practices and holding the wrongdoers accountable.
When regulations are weak or are simply not enforced, trial lawyers are there to ensure injured people are properly compensated and that unsafe practices cease so that others are not also injured. Additionally, when one is aware that there is accountability for harming someone, a person is more likely to be deterred from engaging in unsafe practices just for the sake of profit. We were glad to see the Wall Street Journal — which usually is pro-business and anti-trial lawyer — host an excellent editorial on the importance of trial lawyers.
