What Are the Treatment Options for Lung Cancer?

Treatment options for lung cancer resulting from exposure to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune vary depending on the specific type of cancer a patient develops and the stage at which the patient’s cancer is diagnosed. If diagnosed early enough, it may be possible to treat lung cancer with the following:

• Surgery – In some cases, doctors can physically remove cancerous tissue from the lungs through surgery. Typically, in order for this to be effective, cancer must still be localized within the lungs.
• Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy involves administering highly potent medications that attack the cancer cells in the lungs. With chemotherapy, the goal is typically either to kill cancer entirely or shrink it to the point that it can be surgically removed.  
• Targeted Therapy – Targeted therapy is similar to chemotherapy in that it involves medication, but with targeted therapy, the focus is on stopping cancer’s growth and preventing it from spreading further throughout the body.
• Radiation Therapy – Radiation therapy involves attacking the cancer cells in the lungs with targeted rays (similar to X-rays) that damage the DNA within the cells, either killing them or causing them to replicate less rapidly. This form of therapy can have various side effects, but it will be lung cancer patients’ best option in some cases.

What is the Prognosis for Lung Cancer Patients?

The prognosis for patients with lung cancer varies, with one of the primary determining factors being the stage at which a patient’s cancer is diagnosed. For example, while the five-year survival rate with early detection is 56 percent, the overall five-year survival rate is just 18.6 percent. According to the American Lung Association, “[f]or distant tumors (spread to other organs) the five-year survival rate is only 5 percent,” and “[m]ore than half of the people with lung cancer die within one year of being diagnosed.”
