Monsanto began offering glyphosate, the chemical used in Roundup, as an herbicide in 1974. Recent studies found a probable association between repeated exposure to glyphosate and cancers of the lymphatic system – specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
In 2015, the World Health Organization and the classified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen, linking it to many forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The Environmental Protection Agency has not classified glyphosate as a human carcinogen, despite findings around the world.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body’s immune system. This type of lymphoma affects the body’s lymphatic system lymphatic system, which includes organs, glands, vessels, and cells called lymph nodes The lymph system is part of the immune system, which helps fight infections and some other diseases. It also helps fluids move through the body. Lymphomas can start anywhere in the body where lymph tissue is found. Without treatment, it can eventually spread to other parts of the body and can result in death.
Nevertheless, the makers of Roundup continue to maintain that Roundup does not cause cancer and these cases are continuing to be tried before juries.
In 2018, a California jury found in favor of a school groundskeeper and awarded $289 million in damages for failure to warn the plaintiff that Roundup caused cancer. The groundskeeper developed lymphoma after spraying up to 30 times a day over a period of four years. The court later reduced the . In March 2019, another California jury , finding that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in the plaintiff developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In October and December 2021, two different juries reached two defense verdicts, awarding the plaintiffs nothing. In June 2022, two more juries reached defense verdicts, awarding those plaintiffs nothing. In September 2022, November 2022, May 2023, and September 2023, four separate juries reached four separated verdicts in favor of the makers of Roundup, awarding the plaintiffs nothing.
In October 2023, a St. Louis, Missouri jury awarded $1.25 million, finding that the chemicals in Roundup could cause cancer. One week after that verdict, a Philadelphia jury awarded $175 million for the plaintiff. In November 2023, a California jury awarded $332 million to a plaintiff who developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after his use of Roundup. That same month, a Missouri jury awarded four plaintiffs $1.56 billion in damages. The next month, however, in December 2023, a jury found in favor of the makers of Roundup and awarded the plaintiff nothing.
In January 2024, a Pennsylvania man was awarded $2.25 billion. In March 2024, two juries reached a defense verdict, and the plaintiffs received nothing. In September 2024, the jury again sided with the makers of Roundup, and the plaintiff received no compensation. In October 2024, a man was awarded $78 million by another jury in Pennsylvania.
This litigation is clearly ongoing and there are appeals of several of the above verdicts. There are over 4,000 cases filed.
